English as a Second Language (ESL)
ReadRight
All ReadRight lessons are based on Dr. Catherine Penney's eulexonics methodology. The lessons are
structured similarly to the Leap Into Language instructional design. Three of 15 modules are currently
available. Each module contains 4 lessons plus a review.
Leap into Language®
In our A Whale of a Tale series, primary students are motivated by animated sea creatures as they explore
core subject areas like language, math and science. To make the learning experience fun, Little Blue
and his friends share interesting facts about the world in which we live - watch your students' reaction
as they learn that a blue whale's heart is as big as a small car!
The series develops reading, writing and listening strategies and techniques.
The special application for the A Whale of a Tale(R) series as supplemental content based language practice
in ESL immersion as well as bilingual ESL programs is a powerful enhanced focus for INNOVA. Fundamentally,
language skills are at the heart of all learning and solid language skills enable the learner the freedom
to explore the world's knowledge. All lessons in the A Whale of a Tale series reflect this philosophy.
A deep understanding of the language learning process informs INNOVA's ongoing development of software for
the ESL/EFL community. Good language teachers understand the relationship between language usage and the
underlying skills needed to use language effectively. The teacher understands the individual needs of the
learner in relation to the inventory of skills needed to use language effectively. INNOVA applications are
designed to complement the teacher's efforts to establish an ideal language learning environment.
Spanish Title
All titles are suitable for translation into other languages. The Surf Into Science 3 title has been
translated into Spanish.
Through collaboration with the Chilean organizations CIS Informatica and Universidad de Santo Tomas,
INNOVA has created a Spanish language version of Surf Into Science 3 Using curriculum specific content
from the original English language series, the development team have reprogrammed the title to include
Spanish text and sound files. The Spanish adaptation proves useful both for immersion students with a
rudimentary knowledge of the Spanish language and ESL students learning English. As both titles are
identical save for the language components, students can compare the two to assist in learning new
vocabulary. The titles consist of the following lessons:
As with all software produced by INNOVA Multimedia, both the English and Spanish versions of A Whale of
a Tale Surf into Science 3 focus on curriculum related content. Starting with researched curriculum
standards representing a cross section of school districts in North America, INNOVA's software supplements
what a child would normally learn in the classroom or homeschool environment. Avoidance of clutter and
superfluous eye candy ensures the product's usefulness as a learning tool and sets the software apart
from "edutainment" titles. Easy to use navigation, clean graphics and clear voice intonation facilitate
instruction.
Many of the titles in the series have also been translated into Korean as well as localized to the
United Kingdom English dialect, further demonstrating the flexibility of the series.
