Fishing for Words

Learning Outcomes

Students will:
  • Use knowledge of letter-sound relationships in reading and writing contexts.
  • Use beginning dictionaries and class theme lists as spelling resources.
  • Demonstrate awareness of social conventions in cooperative group activities.

Activity

  • Fit the name of each sea creature in the puzzle.

  • To help you spell the sea creatures' names, say their names slowly and listen for the beginning sound. Look for the names of each sea creature somewhere on this page.

  • Puzzle page is a ship towing a net (H.M.S. Bottlenose). The first letter of each word should be highlighted as a clue to helping children with correct spelling.

  • A challenge from Winnie Dolphin.... Try this with a friend... Create your own Fishing for Words puzzle. Choose a favourite topic, pets, sea creatures, dinosaurs. Create a list of words associated with your topic. Use the dictionaries and other classroom books to help with spelling. Draw your pictures here.

Assessment Tips from Old Tom the Turtle

  • Observe and note the degree of independence children display in creating their own crossword puzzle. Conference with groups to ascertain strategies they are attempting to use.

  • Listen to students as they work in groups, noting the extent to which they are aware of social conventions.
