Language Two: Rhyming Fun Learning Outcomes Students will: 1. Use a variety of familiar text forms to create texts collaboratively in shared writing 2. Demonstrate awareness that work shared with an audience need revising and editing 3. Recognize rhyming words Activity Continue the rhyming fun began in "Leap into Language 2". Read a number of sea rhymes, rhyming poems, and rhyming fingerplays to the class. In the context of shared reading locate and discuss the rhyming words in each text form. Choose a class favourite and collaboratively write a class "copycat" rhyming text together. Invite the children to work with a class friend and create their own rhyming texts. As a culminating activity have the children select a favourite piece to illustrate. Display in the school corridor. Assessment Old Tom the Turtle gives some hints for assessment: 1. Observe and note students' abilities to recognize rhyming words in the context of reading 2. During small group conferences, observe and note whether children are using rhyming words in the context of writing 3. Note the extent to which students are willing to revise and edit their writing.
