Using a variety of Sentences

Learning Outcomes

Students will:
  • Name and use three types of sentences ( statement, question, exclamation).
  • Use the correct punctuation mark - period(.) / question mark(?) / exclamation (!).

Activity

  • Using popsicle sticks, or tongue depressors, children make punctuation sticks. Teacher reads a sentence and children must hold up the stick with the correct mark.

  • Worksheet - One sheet with three headings.
Three headings - statement question exclamation
Second sheet containing the three types of sentences. Students are to cut out sentences and paste under the correct heading.

  • Teacher provides each child with a basal reader (or any book) and says "Drop and Search for....."
The children drop their book and search for the exposed pages for whatever type of sentence the teacher has asked for. They must copy the sentences, line number and the page number. Teacher says "Stop!" After a pre-determined amount of time and will repeat the command. At the end of the activity the teacher will list the children's names and the number of sentences they found.

  • Worksheet with sentences and children must choose the correct punctuation mark to put at the end of the Sentence.

Assessment Tips from Old Tom the Turtle

  • Evaluate Worksheets and other work in the suggested activities. Keep anecdotal records of the types of sentences a student uses in a typical piece of writing.
