Using Words to Enhance Meaning


Learning Outcomes

Students will:
  • Select and use words to enhance meaning.

Activity

  • WORKSHEETS:
    Design worksheets in which a phrase or complete sentence is given and student must choose a word(s) to enhance meaning.No more than 5 words at a time until students become very comfortable with this activity.

  • BEFORE AND AFTER:
    Teacher calls out a simple sentence and students draw a picture to illustrate. The teacher then calls out the same sentence but this time with descriptive words. Students again illustrate and compare the two drawings,to show that words CAN enhance meaning.

  • Teacher distributes descriptive word cards to students. Teacher writes sentence on board and shows with a blank where a word can be aded to enhance meaning. Students hold up appropriate card.
