Sentences vs. Phrases


Learning Outcomes

Students will:
  • Distinguish between sentences and phrases.

Activity

  • WORKSHEET
    Design worksheets in which students must identify groups of sentences as sentences or phrases. Make these sentences theme or event related and use the names of your students and school staff members.

  • Copy text on acetate and use on the overhead projector. Remove periods, question and exclamation marks. Expose a section of text. Students have to decide if it represents a sentence or phrase. Discuss before showing complete text and replacing punctuation marks.

  • Partners each write a sentece or a phrase on a strip of paper. They then exchange papers and write P( PHRASE) or S(SENTENCE) on the paper. Exchange and correct (followed by an explanation if incorrect).
