Learning Outcomes

Students will:
  • Assign ordinal values to objects or events from first to fifth.

Activity

  • Make up a set of whale cards. You will need pictures of five different types of whales, e.g., blue, pilot, beluga, orca, and sperm whales.
  • Have the children put them in order by following the directions printed on cards, e.g.,

Sperm Whale

First

  • Be sure to point out the relative aspects of ordinals. The sperm whale is first if we are counting from the right, and the blue whale is first if we are counting from the left.
  • Invite the children to make up rhymes or finger plays about whales, e.g., five little whales swimming in the ocean . The first little whale said, " The Ocean is deep" . The second little whale said, "I spy some whale watchers".

Assessment Tips from Old Tom the Turtle

  • Ask the children to line up for recess, lunch etc. Ask individuals to tell the group who is first in line, second in line... Note individual responses.
