Dive into Math 1: Tens and Ones The student will be able to model and write numbers with tens and ones including zero as a place holder. Activity Make a tens and ones chart holder and 2 sets of numeral cards 0 - 9 for each child(only one zero). To make holder you'll need 2 pieces of bristol board. One piece will be half the height. Staple together around the sides and bottom and label the shorter piece with tens and ones. Place the numeral cards 1-9 in the tens pocket. Place the numeral cards 0-9 in the ones pocket. You can staple in between the two pockets to separate further. The teacher will say,"show me 5 tens and 6 ones" and children will shuffle through their tens cards to find 5 and place it at the front and do the same for the 6 ones. Variation: Use popsicle sticks for True False flags. Teacher will model a number in a holder eg. 65 and will say "this is how we write sixty-five" etc. Students hold up appropriate flag. Worksheets: Design worksheets whereby children write the numeral. eg. For 4 tens and 6 ones we write __ or Matching number of tens and ones in the left column and numerals on the right.
