Comparing Numbers

Learning Outcomes

Students will:
  • compare 2-digit numbers for size.

Activity

Activity one: King of the Castle

Selected child wears a crown and reaches into a bag of numeral cards (10-99) and selects one card. In turn, a child will select a card from the bag hoping to get a numeral that is greater because that student then becomes King of the Castle until a student chooses a numeral greater than his.

Activity two: Randomly distribute one numeral card to each student. Teacher will then select a card and give a direction such as,"Anyone with a number greater than mine, stand up/stand by chalkboard/hop on one foot/ imitate a monkey/sneeze etc.

Activity three: Numeral cards 10-99. 4 students play. Lay one card in turn. STudent with the greatest number takes all the cards for his pile. Student with the largest pile wins.

Worksheets: Design worksheets in which :

i) the student circles the greater/est number.

ii) the student colours the object with the greatest number. (eg. 4 penguins on icebergs numbers 48,84,40,80-they colour 84.)

Assessment:

Make anecdotal observations of students participation during activities. Evaluate worksheets.
