Snap Cube Collections

Learning Outcomes

Students will:
  • Students will add two digit numbers with regrouping.

Activity

  • Provide pairs of students with sets of snap cubes of between 12 and 27.
  • Have students snap their cubes into sets of 10 and some leftover.
  • Ask students to combine their sets. Do you have enough single cubes to make another "train" of 10 cubes?
  • Have students write down the equation that tells about their collections.
  • By having students trade partners, but keeping the same set of cubes, students will practice with several different combinations.

Assessment Tips from Old Tom the Turtle

  • Observe children as they work:

  • Are they looking to see if they can make another 10?

  • Can they create the appropriate equation for their sets?
