Food Fractions

Learning Outcomes

Students will:
  • identify simple fractions (one half, one third, one fourth) using models.
  • explore the concept of a fraction as a "fair share".

Activity

Eating Fractions. (also appropriate for a home activity)

  • Put students in small groups of 2, 3 or 4 (or a number of groups of each size).
  • Provide students with real food items such as a sandwich or a mini pizza per group. Pictures of food items may also be used.
  • Ask students to share the sandwich so that each child in the group receives a "fair share".

Discuss:

  • How did you decide to share your food?
  • How many people were in your group? What is the name for the piece each person received?

Assessment Tips from Old Tom the Turtle

  • Observe how children make a "fair share".

  • Do students use appropriate language when discussing the pieces i.e half, third, fourth?
