Learning Outcomes
Students will:
- identify simple fractions (one
half, one third, one fourth) using models.
- explore the concept of a fraction
as a "fair share".
Activity
Eating Fractions. (also appropriate for
a home activity)
- Put students in small groups of 2,
3 or 4 (or a number of groups of each size).
- Provide students with real food
items such as a sandwich or a mini pizza per
group. Pictures of food items may also be used.
- Ask students to share the sandwich
so that each child in the group receives a
"fair share".
Discuss:
- How did you decide to share your
food?
- How many people were in your
group? What is the name for the piece each person
received?
