Math 2: Food Fractions Learning Outcomes Students will identify simple fractions (one half, one third, one fourth) using models Students will explore the concept of a fraction as a "fair share". Activity: Eating Fractions. (also appropriate for a home activity) Put students in small groups of 2, 3 or 4 (or a number of groups of each size). Provide students with real food items such as a sandwich or a mini pizza per group. Pictures of food items may also be used. Ask students to share the sandwich so that each child in the group receives a "fair share". Discuss: How did you decide to share your food? How many people were in your group? What is the name for the piece each person received? Assessment: Observe how children make a "fair share". Do students use appropriate language when discussing the pieces i.e half, third, fourth?
