Learning Outcomes

Students will:
  • The student will be able to compare, order and represent numerals 0 - 50.

Activity

  • Make and laminate balloons numbered 0 to 50.
    Put 1 stripe on balloons with 1 ten (10-19)
    Put 2 stripes on balloons with 2 tens (20-29)
    Put 3 stripes on balloons with 3 tens (30-39)
    Put 4 stripes on balloons with 4 tens (40-49)
    Put 5 stripes on balloon with 5 tens.

    The balloons numbered 0 - 9 will be solid colored.

  • Game: Show me!

    Distribute above balloons to class in random order. Teacher will ask "Show me 0." The student with this number holds it up and passes it to teacher. Teacher will ask for each numeral in sequence until she has all the balloons.

  • Game: Line up!

    Hang a rope across the classroom (or along a wall)
    Have 51 clothespins ready. Randomly distribute the numbered balloons.

    i) First ask for the following and put them in proper positions on this clothesline. 0,10,20,30,40,50.

    ii) Ask for solid colored balloons to be attached in order (the onus is on the class to notice and reposition any balloons in the wrong position).

    iii) ask for the balloons with one stripe to be placed in order/two stripes/three stripes/four stripes.

    Variation: Keep balloons on the line and ask students to remove specific numbers.

    Worksheets: Design worksheets in which students fill in missing numerals or give the next numeral in sequence. These numerals can be on balloons or any theme-related or seasonal items.

    eg. 12,13,_,_,16,_,18,_
    and 6,7,8,_
    26,27,28,_

Assessment Tips from Old Tom the Turtle

  • Observe students participation in games. Keep anecdotal notes if child is experiencing difficulty. Evaluate all worksheets.
