Converting Fractions


Learning Outcomes

Students will:
  • be able to convert fractions into different denominators.

Activity

  • Arrange the students in pairs


  • Provide them with a worksheet containing:
    1. the number that is to be converted; for example 1/2, followed by,
    2. a series of 9 rectangular boxes divided into 2 - 10 sections,
    3. below the boxes, locate the conversion fraction; for example, 1/2 x 3/3 = ________

  • The students have to:
    1. locate and shade the fractional part of the rectangular box that represents the first fraction; for example, 1/2.
    2. convert the fraction by solving the multiplication sentence, and
    3. locate and shade the fractional part of the rectangular box that represents the answer; for example, 3/6.

  • Use the same color for shading the fractional part of both rectangular boxes.

  • Discuss the answers with the class following the completion of the worksheet.
