Adding Fractions


Learning Outcomes

Students will:
  • be able to add fractions that have a common denominator.

Activity

  • Provide each student with a worksheet of fractions that have a common denominator and below each provide a circle divided into corresponding sections.
    For example:

    1/4 + 2/4 = _________
    with a diagram of a circle divided into four sections or,

    3/10 + 4/10 = __________
  • with a diagram of a circle divided into 10 tenths.

  • The students complete the first item with the teacher's guidance. Inform the students that they are to:
      a. work in pairs on this activity.
      b. use a red coloring lead to shade in the first fractional part (1/4) of the circle; a blue lead for shading the second fractional part (2/4) of the circle,
      c. determine how much of the circle is shaded in all and write the answer in the space provided on the worksheet.

  • Go over the answers with the students following the completion of the worksheet.
