Adding Fractions Students will be able to: add fractions that have a common denominator. ACTIVITY 1. Provide each student with a worksheet of fractions that have a common denominator and below each provide a circle divided into corresponding sections. For example: 1/4 + 2/4 = _________ with a diagram of a circle divided into four sections or, 3/10 + 4/10 = __________ with a diagram of a circle divided into 10 tenths. 2. The students complete the first item with the teacher's guidance. Inform the students that they are to: a. work in pairs on this activity. b. use a red coloring lead to shade in the first fractional part (1/4) of the circle; a blue lead for shading the second fractional part (2/4) of the circle, c. determine how much of the circle is shaded in all and write the answer in the space provided on the worksheet. 3. Go over the answers with the students following the completion of the worksheet.
