Surf into Science 1: Moving Along Learning Outcomes: The student will be able to: * identify and describe the different ways in which animals move * recognize the words: walk, crawl, hop, swim Activity: Using a piece of poster board for each word, write the words: walk, crawl, hop and swim. As each word is identified, have the children act out the movement. The children should be provided the opportunity to read each word. Have the children discuss what types of animals could be placed in each category of movement, e.g., walk (elephant); crawl (crab); hop (rabbit); swim (whale). Ask the children to bring from home a picture, photograph, or drawing of an animal in each of the movement categories. The children place their animals in the correct movement category. A discussion could follow concerning the other ways in which animals move, e.g., flying, gliding, slithering, rolling. Assessment; * Monitor the selection of animals the students provide. * Observe each individuals placement of the animals in each category. * Use individual conferences to assess word recognition and meaning.
