The Four Basic Food Groups

Learning Outcomes

Students will:
  • describe a balanced diet using the four basic food groups.

Activity

  • Send a note home to the parents explaining that the students are participating in a Science Unit on The Four Basic Food Groups. In this regard, each student is being asked to bring along pictures of a variety of foods. The pictures may be obtained from the food flyers that you receive weekly in the mail or newspaper inserts.
  • While waiting for the food pictures to be brought along to the school, the teacher should design the food group sheet that the students will use to paste their pictures. Make your design in the shape of a circle with the 4 quadrants labelled with the names of the four food groups.
  • Once you have obtained a good selection of food pictures, arrange the students in groups, and have them cut out the pictures and paste them into the proper food groups.

Assessment Tips from Old Tom the Turtle

  • Circulate, observe, and ask questions as each child cuts and pastes pictures into the appropriate food groups.
  • Observe the child's interaction with other group members.

  • Evaluate each child's worksheet following the completion of the centre activity.
