Science Three: Decomposer Watch Learning Outcomes Students will: 1. Discover how moulds grow. 2. Discuss how moulds are important decomposers. Activity Why not provide your students with the opportunity to observe the decomposing process? Grow some moulds. Simply place a slice of bread into a plastic container, dampen it with water and cover the top of the box with cling wrap. Each day check to see if any moulds have grown. Provide hand lenses for closer observation.   You might also grow moulds from other materials, e.g., collect apple cores from recess snacks, and pieces of cheese. Have children look around and note any moulds they may have at home in their refrigerator or cupboard. Assessment Tips from Old Tom the Turtle Have children use their science journal to record and discuss their "mould findings" from home. Review their journals to determine the effectiveness of this particular activity in developing student understandings. At the completion of "Decomposer Watch" initiate a full class discussion on the importance of decomposers to the environment. Remind the children you will be making notes about the discussion.
