Surf into Science 3: Endangered Species The student will be able to: · define the term "endangered species". Activity: Visit the Learning Resource Centre in your school and gather a list of endangered animals from around the world. Be sure that there is adequate material on each organism for the students to complete the worksheet. Suggested Endangered Species in various parts of the world: Leatherback Turtle Harlequin Duck Piping Plover Green Sturgeon Beluga Whale Burrowing Owl Wood Poppy Tiger Prairie Rose Loggerhead Shrike Wild Hyacinthe Walrus Blue Whale Bowhead Whale Gray Whale Humpback Whale Peregrin Falcon Sea Otter Whooping Crane Grizzly Bear Polar Bear Trumpeter Swan Wolverine Pine Marten Elephant Rhinoceros Alligator Bald Eagle Manatee Leopard Write the names of the endangered species on separate slips of paper and place the slips in a bag. Each student comes forward, draws a name from the bag, and is given a worksheet. Explain the worksheet and take the students to the Learning Resource Centre to gather information on their organism. If the students have access to the internet, encourage its use as well. Following the project, have the students give an oral report on their organism to the class. Assessment: · Circulate and discuss the child's organism relative to what have learned so far ; eg. why their organism is considered to be an endangered species in that part of the world; their interesting facts. · Evaluate the content of each child's worksheet. · Evaluate the child's oral report.
