School and the Neighbourhood


Learning Outcomes

Students will:
  • make and use a simple map to locate specific areas within the school and the school within the community.

Activity

  • Have the children draw a map of the school and neighbourhood on a sheet of paper. The children can name or highlight the important offices and classrooms within the school and the buildings in the neighbourhood, police station, fire station, library. etc.. Using coloured pencils the children can indicate the most common walking routes to the school.

Assessment Tips from Old Tom the Turtle

  • Circulate around the classroom as the students complete their maps. Note observations on their understanding of creating a map.
