Social Studies Three: Crossword Puzzle Fun

Learning Outcomes

Students will:

1. Identify the four oceans.
2. Name the seven continents.

Activity

As a whole class activity, brainstorm the names of the oceans and continents. You can use a map to locate each one. Later the children can create a crossword puzzle using some or all of this information. Word searcher could also be developed. For added fun have the children use the computer to create their puzzles.
          
Note:  Students will need to have some background information on the continents and oceans before creating the puzzle. For this reason, the crossword puzzle would be appropriate as an end of unit activity. The word search will help familiarize children with the names.

Across
2.The narwhal swims in the cold waters of this ocean.
Down
2. This continent starts with the letter A and has four letters in its name.

Make notes as children are working on these tasks.
 
For example, John used the ocean names in the puzzle, encountered difficulty in remembering the continents-India, Asia. Enjoyed task immensely.
