"A Whale of a Tale: Dive into Math 1" is an interactive CD-ROM designed to help students learn basic Mathematics skills. This multimedia package uses animated cartoon characters to add an interesting storyline to the delivery of key curriculum concepts. The program is pedagogically sound with an expert in Primary curriculum development retained as the content consultant. The program is designed for children ages five through seven and can be used both in school and at home. The program comes complete with a Teacher's Guide and 32 blackline masters.

"A Whale of a Tale" series is developed around core curriculum topics in Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies.

"A Whale of a Tale: Dive into Math 1" is an interactive Mathematics multimedia program designed to provide an integrated fun approach to learning mathematics for the student. It incorporates a combination of tutorial, discovery, drill, and practice learning strategies and techniques. Remedial and enrichment activities are integral components of the program. Sophia the Lobster introduces thirteen "Just for Fun" games while Jerry the Jellyfish offers twenty pieces of whale trivia for the student to read and listen to.

"Dive into Math 1" is divided into seven sections:

1. Volume and Mass
2. Length
3. Pictograph
4. Add and Subtract
5. Word Problems
6. Bar Graphs
7. Just for Fun

  • Volume and Mass: Concentrates on the concepts of More or Less using solids and liquids and Heavy/Light using a balance. Students are encouraged to make estimates and guesses before selecting answers.
  • Length: Teaches students concepts of shorter and longer and estimating precise lengths in centimeters or inches.
  • Pictograph: Shows students that a graph is a quick way of seeing information all at once. Students learn how to read a pictograph and how to build one.
  • Add and Subtract: The operations of addition and subtraction are taught in the context of interactive games.
  • Word Problems: Two levels of word problems are presented in a cartoon setting. If mistakes are made, then correct answers are explained to the student in a step-by-step format.
  • Bar Graphs: Students are introduced to vertical and horizontal bar graphs. Students learn how to read and interpret these graphs and then apply given information to building their own graph.
