Features & Benefits:"A Whale of a Tale: Surf into
Science 1" is an interactive multimedia science
program designed to encourage students to ask questions
about the world around them and to discover the answers
to some of these questions by interacting with the
program. Quizzes, reinforcement games, and activities
accompany all sections of the program. Remedial and
enrichment are integral components. Sophia the Lobster
introduces eight "Just for Fun" games and Jerry
the Jellyfish offers twenty pieces of whale trivia
for students to read and listen to.
"Surf into Science 1"
is divided into five sections:
1. Motion
2. Living Things
3. Growth
4. Seasons
5. Just for Fun
- Motion:
Students are encouraged to think about the
different ways things, animals, and plants move.
Direction and the compass are introduced first
and then students interact by determining in
which direction the whales are swimming. Penny
the Puffin and Old Tom
the Turtle demonstrate
levels and slopes and rough and smooth surfaces.
- Living Things:
Students distinguish between living and
non-living things and discover how living things
depend on one another for survival. They learn to
identify an animal by its animal track. As they
observe a baby growing into an adult, an egg
growing into a butterfly, and a seed growing into
a vegetable, students master the concept of
changes in living things.
- Growth:
Students learn that all living things are made up
of cells and that growth occurs when cells divide
to produce new cells. The different types of
plant cells and the important parts of a tree are
demonstrated. Students investigate what plants,
animals, and people need in order to grow, e.g.,
food, water and air.
- Seasons:
Students are introduced to the basic concepts
underlying the four seasons. After studying
pictures of the four seasons, students are
encouraged to distinguish between them. Percy
the Penguin writes a
weather journal for students to read and then
helps the students to write their own. The
concepts of animals migrating, hibernating, and
seasonally changing colours are introduced in
this section.
