Features & Benefits:

"A Whale of a Tale: Surf into Science 2" is an interactive Science multimedia program designed to encourage students to ask questions about the world around them and to discover the answers to some of these questions by interacting with the program. The emphasis of the program is learning by doing: making balloons fly and ships move. Quizzes, reinforcement games, and activities accompany all sections of the program. Remedial and enrichment are integral components. Sophia the Lobster introduces eleven "Just for Fun" games and Jerry the Jellyfish offers twenty pieces of whale trivia for students to read and listen to.

"Surf into Science 2" is divided into seven sections:

1. Parts of a _ _ _
2. Ecology (land and ocean)
3. Water and Air Propulsion
4. Light and Sound
5. Rocks and Fossils
6. Colors
7. Just for Fun

  • Parts of a _ _ _: Percy the Penguin leads the student through labeling the parts of a whale, both outside and inside (skeleton). A whale's tooth is compared to the rings of a tree to determine age and climate conditions, etc. The "Barnacle Band" investigates the tiny animals that live on the skin of a whale and shows how the whale keeps itself clean from those "hitchhikers".
  • Ecology (land and ocean): All animals must eat to live. Students learn about basic food chains and food groups. Using Baleen and Toothed whales, they investigate Diatoms and Zooplankton with Samantha the Seahorse.
  • Water and Air Propulsion: The world of movement through air and water is introduced through simple machines. The manner in which animals, e.g., whales propel themselves is shown. Freddy the Flying Fish explains the workings of his hot air balloon.
  • Light and Sound: Animation demonstrates how echolocation works and how objects, when submerged in water, become distorted.
  • Rocks and Fossils: Students are introduced to the world of paleontology. Utilizing interactive games, students discover fossils and rocks from the beginning of time.
  • Colors: The primary colors offer an opportunity for students to play with mixing colors. Cartoon characters lead students through the underwater world of color.
  • Just for Fun :
  1. Parts of _ _ _ : Level: A & B
  2. Eco-fixer (land and ocean) Level: A & B
  3. Walk, Swim, Fly: Level: A & B
