"A Whale of a Tale: Surf into Science 3" is an interactive CD-ROM designed to help students learn basic Science skills. This multimedia package uses animated cartoon characters to add an interesting storyline to the delivery of key curriculum concepts. The program is pedagogically sound with an expert in Primary curriculum development retained as the content consultant. The program is designed for children ages seven through nine and can be used both in school and at home.

The "A Whale of a Tale" series is based on around core curriculum topics in the Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies curriculum areas.

"A Whale of a Tale: Surf into Science 3" is an interactive multimedia program designed to encourage students to ask questions about the world around them and to discover the answers to some of these questions by interacting with the program. The emphasis of the program is learning by doing: grinding flour and making electricity. Quizzes, reinforcement games, and activities accompany all sections of the program. Remedial and enrichment are integral components. Sophia the Lobster introduces eight "Just for Fun" games and Jerry the Jellyfish offers twenty pieces of whale trivia for students to read and listen to.



"Surf into Science 3" is divided into five sections:

1. Environment
2. Earth
3. Weather
4. Energy
5. Just for Fun

  • Environment: Freddy the Flying Fish loves to explore his natural surroundings or ecosystem. The three types of animals that make up an ecosystem, namely producers, consumers and decomposers are studied here. Also, Miranda the Sea Otter introduces her seacoast ecosystem while Freddy researches the types of trees found in a forest ecosystem.
  • Earth: Sid the Seagull examines the different layers of soil (topsoil, subsoil, bedrock), while Penny the Puffin studies the different parts of plants (flower, leaves, stem, roots). The four important parts of the flower are introduced here. Discover the different landforms of the Earth with Albert the Albatross, who has a bird’s eye view.
  • Weather: Percy the Penguin studies and predicts the weather while Penny the Puffin investigates the different types of clouds overhead. Examine air in motion, how it originates, and how it is measured, with Penny the Puffin.
  • Energy: Rocky Barnacle investigates magnets and what they can do, discovering the Law of Magnetic Poles. Old Tom the Turtle learns how to make electricity, grind flour, pump water, sail ships, transport goods and turn water wheels through studying wind and water power. Research ways to capture and use solar energy with Amy.
