| Learning about our world
is the focus of Surf into Science levels 1, 2 and 3, part
of INNOVA Multimedia’s A Whale of a TaleŽ series.
Little Blue, a baby blue whale, and his underwater
friends help children aged 5 to 9 discover how nature and
science are a very important part of our lives. Surf into Science is an effective learning tool
because it allows children to learn by doing. In level 1,
young students are introduced to basic science concepts.
Interactive activities help them understand concepts like
the changes that occur in living things (eggs to
butterflies, babies to adults, seeds to vegetables) and
motion (plants grow towards the sunlight). In level 2,
they take their scientific knowledge to the next level.
One activity, for example, involves an investigation of
why we see things in colour: blue sky, green grass and
rainbows. By level 3, students – now budding
scientists! – are exploring more advanced topics
like ecosystems, weather systems and energy. One of the
more challenging activities in this level involves
identifying different cloud types.
In each of the three levels, lessons
include reinforcement games and quizzes, ensuring that
learning is both challenging and fun. Upon completion of
a science lesson, children have mastered an essential
education concept and they’ve gained
knowledge that both satisfies and boosts their natural
curiosity in science. The ‘Just for Fun’
section in each product allows young scientists to take
some time out to discover how science and play are a
natural partnership. Even cleaning up – when
it’s an ecosystem! – can be fun.
