"A Whale of a Tale: Swim into Social Studies 1" is an interactive CD-ROM designed to help students learn basic geography and social skills. This multimedia package uses animated cartoon characters to add an interesting storyline to the delivery of key curriculum concepts. The program is pedagogically sound with an expert in Primary curriculum development retained as the content consultant. The program is designed for children ages 5 through 7 and can be used both in school and at home.

The "A Whale of a Tale" series is based on around core curriculum topics in the Mathematics, Language Arts, Science and Social Studies curriculum areas.

"A Whale of a Tale: Swim into Social Studies 1" is an interactive multimedia program designed to encourage students to discover the world around them. Students learn about rules, responsibilities and relationships within the home, school and the community; and are introduced to scale by investigating the plans of a house, a school and community, and much, much more. Quizzes, reinforcement games, and activities accompany all sections of the program. Remedial and enrichment are integral components. Jerry the Jellyfish; offers an abundance of whale trivia for students to read and listen to.



"Swim into Social Studies 1" is divided into five sections:

3. Community
4. Maps
5. Just for Fun

  • Home: Old Tom the Turtle introduces his friends to the concept of scale by using a plan of a house. Cedric the Starfish learns what it is to be part of the lagoon family through experiencing basic rules, responsibilities and relationships (decision making and chores). Visit with Percy the Penguin and his family to explore how each member of the family recognizes their responsibilities and describes the positive consequences of working together.
  • School: Sophia the Lobster shows her friends the plan or map of her new school. Using the plan, they investigate all the different rooms and routes in the school. In his hot air balloon, Freddy the Flying Fish draws a map of the community around the school. He learns that maps show real things but not real sizes. Reading the map Freddy investigates the shortest routes to get to and from school and go on outings. Mama Penguin explains to her class the reason for school rules both in the classroom and around the school. The children learn about rules, cooperation and safety.
  • Community: Albert the Albatross introduces children to the purpose and importance of a community map. Children learn about symbols, legends and routes using the community map. Shelly the Crab visits a new community and is introduced to some of the people who live and work in the community. She meets the community workers and learns about their jobs and their hobbies. Cedric the Starfish explores the different ways in which people get around in the community. Children are introduced to words dealing with transportation.
  • Maps: Freddy the Flying Fish makes a map and draws small pictures to represent real things. He introduces children to map symbols while extending vocabulary by naming the symbols, e.g., farm, airport, police. Freddy shows children how to use the map legend. Oscar the Octopus is interested in different types of maps, e.g., plans, street maps, star maps, and sea maps. Percy the Penguin introduces map words that he uses when reading maps, like top, bottom, middle, centre, left and right.
